My Wisconsin Experience

I led UW-Madison's UPL and ran Wisconsin's largest hackathon, and got four years of audacity, whimsy, and absurdity to remember it by.

I have been released into the wild after 17 years of structured education. Hooray! (I think?—I’ll keep my panic bottled up inside.)

Over my four years at UW-Madison (2022-2026), I have had a front-row seat to a lot of crazy adventures, fantastic opportunities, and tragic sendoffs. Here are a few of the things that made it what it was…

From SOAR orientation—where I somehow scrounged up like 10 friends through a Discord server11 Each year, a “Class of 202X” server had been made. It hadn’t been made yet for 2026, so I made it myself. The regulars in that server coordinated to take the same SOAR date. We had great turnout! I later deleted the server over a salad because Cole dared me to. to explore Madison with—right up until my final hour as a student, I never found it hard to meet someone I could relate to and enjoy talking to.

The campus is a selling point, to be sure. I spent a lot of time on Lakeshore path as an underclassman, walking beside the sparkling lake. I also love all the cool and unique (and confusing) architecture—from the brutalist buildings built around the Vietnam War, to Science Hall and its map room which looks like it’s out of another time, to a literal red castle. All of this in the downtown heart of Madison.

And while the classes I took were never particularly hard, that meant I could spend more time learning outside of class, doing cool things, and getting to know those who’d eventually become my close friends.

Projects

Outside of class, I did a lot—and almost none of it alone. Most of these projects are really stories about the people I got to work on them with.

The first thing I did when I arrived at Madison was attach myself to a senior named Michael and ask him for advice. He recommended that I join Informatics Skunkworks as a good way to build experience. So freshman- and sophomore-year me did ML research alongside Anish and Yohan, advised by Ben Afflerbach and Dane Morgan. We trained22 We also got to run jobs on CHTC, UW–Madison’s high-throughput computing center built around HTCondor. generative models to design new crystal structures with target physical properties, which was a strange and humbling thing to work on as an underclassman who barely knew what he was doing.

In the spring of my freshman year, I went to my first hackathon and met Sarah, Haruto, and Wen Jie—more on that further down. We stayed together and ended up winning at another hackathon in Iowa, which was fun too.

Then, in February of my sophomore year, after helping found the Wisconsin Quantum Computing Club alongside Ari, Dhanvi, and Patrick, I traveled to MIT for IQuHACK 2024 with Saro33 I swear Saro ingested at least 1,700 mg worth of caffeine from many, many Celceii. I’m glad he survived because he was carrying us on his back., Kshitij, and Dhanvi. We built a GAN that ran on a photonic quantum computer, using Quandela’s Perceval framework to train it to mimic a target quantum state. I assembled the actual circuit and learned a lot from both my team and Sam from Quandela. And after twenty-four hours, one of our plots indicated we had zero loss… which wasn’t quite right. But everything else went great!

MadHacks

MadHacks was my first-ever hackathon44 A hackathon is a programming competition where you and a team have 24 hours to lock in and build something cool. MadHacks is the largest in-person hackathon in Wisconsin. when I competed in Spring 2023. I enjoyed it so much I went on to help organize the event in Fall 2024, and again in Fall 2025. Each time we made it bigger and better.

In a little more detail, to run a hackathon, you need to secure funding through corporate sponsorships, find a venue, create and maintain a budget, recruit volunteers, mentors, and judges, build a website, publish and process applications, and accept, reject, feed, and generally provide for hundreds of people. Most of this happened beforehand, but the most fun (and most chaotic) part was the twenty-four hours when all the hard work came together and 417 people hunkered down to hack while collectively downing nearly one thousand energy drinks.

I don’t mean to feed into a cliché, but it really is cool to watch people program something outside the classroom for the first time. Usually, they care way more, and when they get stuck, it’s rewarding to watch them figure it out as a team—or even give them a pointer or two myself.

Watching them makes me think back to my first MadHacks. Sarah, Haruto, Wen Jie, and I had just finished CS 300 with Hobbes, and we decided—with the confidence of people who had only been programming for about half a year—that we’d build a program to read handwritten Java code from a photograph and compile it. We didn’t really know what OCR was. We weren’t sure how to wire everything together. We spent most of the twenty-four hours figuring out how to make Java code compile other Java code. We couldn’t have done it without patient mentors, a lot of google searching, and rewriting half of our codebase from scratch.

And then, somewhere in the last few hours, it kind of worked. Not well, mind you—the OCR library was pretty bad (it was free), and our team’s repo was a jumbled mess of Python, Java, and JS—but if your handwriting was clear enough, sometimes, it spat out something the compiler would actually accept. We were genuinely overjoyed. We learned a ton, and we had no idea what we were doing, and those two things turned out to be the same thing.

That particular version of a hackathon is mostly gone now. The hackers I helped mentor in 2025 weren’t doing what we were doing in 2023, and honestly, they probably can’t anymore—an AI agent could one-shot a better handwritten-Java compiler in a few hours than the four of us cobbled together in a day. I’m not going to pretend I know what hackathons should look like next, or whether what’s replacing the old way is better or worse on balance. I just know that the particular thing that happened to me and Sarah and Haruto and Wen Jie in Educational Sciences in 2023 was special, and it doesn’t quite happen the same way anymore, so I’m glad I got to catch the tail end of it.

The UPL

At some point during the second semester of my sophomore year, I wandered down from Lakeshore66 UW-Madison dorms are divided across two regions: Southeast (city hustle and bustle) and Lakeshore (summer camp vibes). Walking between the two is something of a stark transition. Where I lived, in Phillips, was the farthest possible location from everything else. and encountered the rest of the world.

I walked into the Computer Sciences & Statistics Building77 My favorite building on campus. It’s fragmented, uneven, and fantastic. There are half-floors and hard-to-find stairwells. It’s also home to the finest lecture hall on campus, CS 1240. It has those faded 80’s vibes! through the doors beneath The Shelf, went up the ramp, passed the peeling yellow walls and flower chairs, turned left, and found myself in a mysterious triangular room called the Undergraduate Projects Lab (UPL).

The UPL was established in 1984, and in those days it was stacked to the brim with minicomputers; those days have passed, but UPL has stuck around. It remains a place for intrinsically motivated CS types88 Skrentny, one of my professors, used to call us this—I think it’s rather endearing. to work on cool stuff, learn from one another, and hang out. It’s really cool.

UPL’ers dropped in, engaged in spontaneous shenanigans, and dropped out (though sometimes they’d stick around until 2AM99 Seriously, I’d go in to the CS building before noon, sun shining, and since there are no windows in view of the UPL, there were times I’d depart the UPL and be surprised that it was suddenly pitch black.). Every day, the whiteboards were filled with anything from proofs to memes or that month’s ‘banned words list’1010 At one point, the banned words list included: trivial, NGMI/WAGMI, indubitably, OpenAI phone interview, anywhom, mickey mouse/“mickey”, Alibaba phone interview, and something about riding the O Camel into Jane Street..

I ended up being in the lab a lot, and so did a few others who would eventually become my close friends. We got up to all sorts of fun and crazy stuff, ran events for the broader CS student community, and had a grand old time.

One thing I’m particularly proud of is bringing back the Lightning Talks series, where UPL’ers share their favorite topics in tech. Nearly two dozen students took the opportunity to share what they were passionate about with the broader CS community.

I could talk about the UPL for hours, as there is a ton of lore and many stories to tell. I am incredibly grateful that I summoned the courage to go in that day, and to everyone who welcomed me in. From the outside, it seemed exclusive, and I didn’t feel smart enough to belong, but it turns out I fit in rather well; I am a different person now because of it.

UPL Moving Day

In 2025, UW-Madison completed Morgridge Hall, site of the new School of Computer, Data, and Information Sciences (CDIS)1111 Later, the College of Computing and AI.. The main consequence of the building’s completion was that we, the UPL, would have to move buildings for the first time in our 40-year history.

I was the one who took down every poster and piece of wall decor. I packed boxes with things that had been hanging since before I was born: a letter from a Google employee with a check enclosed, a map of the steam tunnels beneath campus, a printed email exchange between John Carmack and a UPL’er; and newer additions: Nick’s keyboard schematic for the nice!nano, a screenshot of Professor Marc Renault explaining how he dominated at dodgeball with a 9:1 K/D, and a picture of Kayley beside the smoky UPL microwave. There was much more, too, from across decades.

In a way, the room felt like a snapshot of what computing used to be: more personal, more chaotic, more creative. I look back on that era with a kind of pervasive nostalgia, and while I was packing everything away, I sometimes felt like I had no right to be the one dismantling it.

What made it special

The UPL, to me, is the audacity of Lucas’s APL interpreter, which was just so mind-bogglingly different from anything I’d seen before, full of symbols I’ve only ever seen on a chalkboard or in a Unicode symbol list. The UPL is the whimsy of Andrew’s receipt printer, which is literally just an endpoint you can hit to print off whatever you want into the physical lab, like fun custom crosswords, or a daily slip to indicate when the doors were open. The UPL is the absurdity of Ben aliasing all the C types and creating an arena allocator before even starting the OS project, and then taking less time on the project than he did on the setup… All odd, fun ideas which capture the unique quirks and passions of individual UPL’ers.

The UPL, to me, is the deep, technical conversations and the 2AM talks that started hours earlier. It’s staying up all night to study for an OS exam you’re taking tomorrow; it’s watching the entire front row of the lecture hall fill up with UPL’ers the next morning.

The UPL, to me, is programming, the incremental process of repeated failure and eventual success through which you temper something beautiful.

And, of course, the UPL is the people who welcomed me in when I wasn’t so sure I’d be a good fit; the people who were there every single day, and those who made guest appearances every now and again; it’s the people whom I got to welcome in, and watch as they realized they were a good fit too.
